BIGLOBE constructs lower-cost, high-density scalable storage environment

BIGLOBE, a leading Japanese ISP serving roughly 3 million broadband users, needed a more robust, scalable mail storage system as email retention grew past 500 TB and costs were rising. To tackle this, BIGLOBE chose Scality and its Scality RING object storage software (deployed on HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 servers) to replace traditional NAS/SAN approaches and support long-term mail archiving.

Scality implemented Scality RING on x86 HPE ProLiant SL4540 nodes, integrating with BIGLOBE’s Zimbra mail platform; the initial rollout used six nodes (each with 88 TB disk and 192 GB memory) with plans to expand to 26 nodes for more than 2 PB of capacity. The Scality solution delivered petabyte-class scalability, simplified management, secure object replication, and major cost savings — cutting storage TCO by up to two-thirds and lowering operating costs to roughly one-third of the prior environment while enabling growth to tens of petabytes.
