Steel Summit Holdings - Customer Case Study

Steel Summit Holdings, a Sumitomo subsidiary supplying specialized steel products to automotive, electrical, HVAC and industrial customers, faced aging Windows servers at two manufacturing sites and wanted to virtualize to improve availability and disaster recovery. With a three-person IT team supporting 130 users, they required a cost-effective, easy-to-manage solution with site-to-site replication and avoided VMware because of licensing costs and lack of in-house experience.

They selected Scale Computing HC3, a hyperconverged platform that combines storage, servers and virtualization without additional hypervisor licensing, lowering upfront costs and simplifying management. After validating on a test cluster, Steel Summit consolidated two Windows domains on HC3, achieved predictable scaling and lower costs (12% less acquisition cost and 26% lower 5-year TCO versus a competing solution), and freed budget and time to pursue other projects like a new corporate office.
