City of St. Cloud - Customer Case Study

The City of St. Cloud, Minnesota (population ~66,300) operates a centralized municipal IT team (11 full‑time, 8 part‑time) that needed a reliable, cost‑effective platform to host a new three‑year ERP rollout (finance, HR, payroll, utility billing). Their existing Dell/VMware and X‑IO SAN environment had caused a painful outage and performance hit during hardware replacement, and the team wanted to avoid the complexity and licensing costs of adding another SAN and VMware hosts, so they piloted Scale Computing’s HC3.

Scale’s HC3 hyperconverged HC2000 cluster combined storage, servers and virtualization with no external SAN or VMware licensing, automatic distributed storage, hot‑swap resiliency and an intuitive web console for seamless upgrades. The pilot met ERP requirements, prompting the city to buy a second unit and begin migrating servers off the SAN (with a third unit planned for the police department), delivering lower cost (estimated under 15% of a comparable SAN), simplified management and reduced downtime risk.
