A Scale Computing Case Study
Auburn University, a large public institution with more than 25,000 students and numerous autonomous colleges, faced an aging, decentralized IT environment in which small college IT teams had to support VDI and dozens of servers with limited budgets and personnel. After promoting a desktop-support technician to IT coordinator and auditing existing kit, leaders from the College of Architecture, Design & Construction and the College of Sciences & Mathematics needed a simple, easy-to-manage virtualization solution that would modernize infrastructure without hiring additional staff.
They deployed Scale Computing’s HC3 (two 4-node HC4000 systems), a converged appliance with a built‑in hypervisor and integrated storage that eliminated separate virtualization and SAN costs. The HC3 simplified management for a small IT team, supported VDI workloads reliably, cut expected costs by roughly two- to threefold versus a traditional approach, and delivered highly responsive vendor support while the colleges migrate services and integrate with Auburn’s Active Directory.
