Vancouver Animation Studio Competes in the Global Marketplace with StudioCloud

Rainmaker Entertainment Inc., a Vancouver-based animation studio and one of Canada’s largest CG animation producers, needed a way to handle massive rendering demands without spending more than it cost to run servers in its own data centre. Working with Scalar Decisions, the company helped form the Vancouver Studio Group (VSG) to pursue a managed services model for scalable, cost-effective computing, using the StudioCloud service.

Scalar Decisions delivered StudioCloud, a community cloud and managed infrastructure environment built for animation, gaming, and FX studios. The solution launched with 700 high-performance servers and grew to more than 2,200, with strict air-gapped security and MPAA-aligned controls. Rainmaker and its partners could lease, share, and sublease capacity as needed, recouping about 50% of lease costs in the last 12 months while gaining access to servers that were reportedly twice as fast as their old systems.
