City of Moose Jaw Balances Performance and Economics with Modular Switches

The City of Moose Jaw, a municipality in Saskatchewan, Canada, needed a network refresh that could support a move to a 10 GbE backbone at City Hall while still providing 1 GbE connectivity for devices like environmental monitors and wireless access points. Scalar Decisions helped address the city’s challenge of finding a solution that met both speed and price-performance requirements without overbuying large, underutilized switches.

Scalar Decisions recommended a modular Brocade switch architecture, deploying nine Brocade ICX 7450 switches in the main site and ICX 7250 switches for outlying locations. This created a single logical stack with centralized management, a redundant fibre ring between floors, and fewer routers in the environment. The result was lower total cost of ownership, simplified administration for a small IT team, and a smooth cutover completed over a weekend.
