Building an Ultra-Low Latency Message Broker Supporting Tree Data Structures

Ematiq, a cutting-edge technology company, required an ultra-low latency message broker to update an in-memory data structure and deliver messages to subscribers in less than a millisecond. They approached vendor Scalac to meet this performance-critical challenge in their sports betting operations.

Scalac developed a solution using Akka Actors, initially with Akka gRPC. After performance testing, they implemented a custom raw TCP protocol and optimized memory usage to drastically reduce garbage collection time. The result was a stable server from Scalac capable of processing 50,000 leaf updates per second, which successfully met Ematiq's stringent low-latency requirements.
