BC Ferries Uses Digital Menu Boards to Reach Hungry Cafe Visitors

British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. (BC Ferries), one of the world’s largest ferry operators with more than 22 million passengers a year, needed a better way to inform hungry café visitors about changing food options before they reached the counter. Its previous menu boards were only visible from inside the café, leaving passengers waiting in line without clear information. BC Ferries turned to Scala digital signage software, via The Data Works, to improve onboard communication and streamline the customer experience.

Scala implemented digital menu boards across the Coastal-class vessels, using six 40-inch screens to display menu choices and cross-promote other onboard amenities. The solution let BC Ferries pre-program and update content from its desks, making scheduling easier and content more flexible. As a result, the company reduced clutter, engaged passengers earlier in the queue, and created a more effective platform for future expansion to additional ships and routes.
