A S&C Electric Company Case Study
PowerNet Limited, a New Zealand utility, faced high maintenance costs and frequent outages on its rural SWER lines due to aging and disabled hydraulic reclosers. They sought a more reliable protection solution to reduce operational expenses and improve service for remote customers. S&C Electric Company provided its TripSaver II cutout-mounted recloser as a potential solution.
S&C's solution involved deploying pilot TripSaver II reclosers, which are electronic, user-configurable devices requiring no routine maintenance. The vendor provided comprehensive training and support throughout the trial. The results were significant: the reclosers prevented temporary faults from becoming outages, saving numerous truck rolls. PowerNet projects that a full deployment of 65 units will save roughly 520 truck rolls and over 1,000 crew hours annually, drastically cutting O&M costs and improving reliability.
