National Grid reduces outages with S&C Electric Company in 19-month TripSaver II trial

National Grid, a major electricity distribution network in the United Kingdom, faced frequent temporary faults on its rural spur lines, leading to costly outages, increased maintenance, and poor reliability metrics. To address this, they turned to S&C Electric Company for a solution, piloting the TripSaver II Cutout-Mounted Recloser.

The solution from S&C Electric Company involved installing 27 TripSaver II reclosers, which autonomously clear temporary faults before they cause permanent outages. Over a 19-month trial, the devices cleared 25 faults, saving approximately £300,000 from incentives and avoided maintenance, and demonstrated a payback period of under six months. The results also included reduced carbon emissions and paved the way for a broader network rollout.
