Florida Power & Light Company cuts restoration time by 8 days with S&C Electric Company

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) faced significant challenges to power reliability due to its coastal Florida geography, which is prone to corrosive salt spray, extreme lightning, tropical storms, and foliage-related outages. Driven to improve service for its nearly 5 million customers, FPL partnered with S&C Electric Company to find better ways to avoid outages and restore power faster following a series of severe hurricanes.

FPL implemented a comprehensive grid modernization plan featuring S&C's IntelliRupter PulseCloser Fault Interrupters and TripSaver II Cutout-Mounted Reclosers. This solution, integrated with S&C's IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System, dramatically improved reliability. Results included a 15-minute reduction in SAIDI, the avoidance of millions of customer interruptions, and a drastically faster restoration after Hurricane Irma compared to previous storms, which contributed an estimated $8 billion back into Florida's economy.
