Preview of the COPEL Case Study

COPEL cuts SAIDI by 68.1% with S&C Electric Company

COPEL, the fourth-largest utility in Brazil, faced stringent new regulatory requirements from the national agency ANEEL, which mandated improvements in system reliability metrics like SAIDI. The challenge was particularly acute in rural areas, prompting COPEL to seek new solutions to avoid financial penalties and meet its concession contracts. They turned to S&C Electric Company to evaluate solutions including the TripSaver II Cutout-Mounted Recloser.

S&C Electric Company worked with COPEL on extensive pilot projects and ultimately a systemwide deployment of 3,300 TripSaver II reclosers. S&C provided key customizations, field training, and support. The results included a 68.1% reduction in SAIDI, a 20% operating-cost reduction relative to the initial investment, and the avoidance of numerous truck rolls. COPEL was so satisfied that it purchased an additional 17,400 units, successfully meeting the regulatory goals.
