Vikings reaches <3 cm navigation precision with SBG Systems

The customer Vikings participated in the ARGOS challenge to develop an autonomous robot for inspecting oil and gas sites, a project requiring highly precise navigation. Their challenge was overcoming the poor accuracy of wheel odometry, especially during rotations, which caused sliding. To solve this, they turned to vendor SBG Systems for a high-performance inertial navigation solution.

SBG Systems provided their Ellipse-A Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) to be fused with the robot's odometry and LiDAR data. The solution from SBG Systems delivered very reliable pitch and roll measurements thanks to its low-drift gyros, enabling the Vikings team to achieve a centimeter-level absolute positioning precision of less than 3 cm. This technical achievement was a major contributor to their two victories in the challenge.
