Case Study: University of Rostock advances autonomous ferry navigation with SBG Systems Ekinox Micro

A SBG Systems Case Study

University of Rostock enables 5-minute dead reckoning for autonomous ferry research with SBG Systems

The University of Rostock's WarnowstromerAI research project faced the challenge of developing a reliable autonomous ferry system for complex urban waterways. They needed precise and uninterrupted positioning data to navigate GNSS-denied areas and dynamic environments, requiring tactical-grade inertial measurement capabilities. SBG Systems provided their Ekinox Micro GNSS/INS navigation system to meet these demands.

SBG Systems' solution delivered the required high-frequency data and dead reckoning capability, enabling the ferry to navigate a 500-meter autonomous route in busy conditions. The seamless integration gave the team a stable data foundation to advance control algorithms and automated functions. The results confirmed the Ekinox Micro as critical sensor equipment for progressing autonomous urban shipping, with the project continuing toward integrating optical sensors for enhanced perception.
