Metro Weather improves shipboard wind measurement over a 15 km radius with SBG Systems

Metro Weather, a company specializing in high-precision wind condition observation using Doppler LiDAR, faced a challenge in obtaining accurate measurements when their systems were installed on moving platforms like ships. The motion of the platform corrupted the wind speed data, requiring precise data on the platform's own movement and tilt for compensation. They engaged with vendor SBG Systems to find a solution using its inertial navigation technology.

SBG Systems implemented its Ellipse-D inertial navigation system to provide the critical data on the platform's speed, tilt, and inclination. This integration allowed Metro Weather to subtract the platform's motion from the LiDAR readings, resulting in highly accurate true wind speed measurements. The solution significantly improved data accuracy, increased the product's market value, and enabled the collection of valuable meteorological data over a 30 km diameter at sea, an area where measurements were previously scarce.
