A Saylent Case Study
Elevations Credit Union, a Boulder, CO financial institution with about 110,000 members and over $1.5 billion in assets, discovered in November 2015 that 24 member Visa cards had been used suspiciously within a narrow time window and were likely compromised. The stolen data was being used to create cloned cards for ATM cash withdrawals, making rapid identification and response critical to avoid escalating losses and wider member impact.
Using CO-OP Revelation’s fraud-forensics tools, Elevations’ team pinpointed a Longmont Safeway as the common point of compromise in minutes, then quickly identified additional at-risk cards (initially 131 more; Visa’s investigation later found 215 total). Elevations canceled and reissued compromised cards and moved through mitigation in about 2.5 weeks — preventing weeks of potential fraud, saving thousands in losses, and accelerating stronger fraud-detection practices and an EMV card conversion.
