Leading Oil & Gas Drilling Contractor Improves Life Safety Strategies by Use of Technology

Transocean, a leading offshore drilling contractor, faced critical life‑safety and accountability challenges: slow, error‑prone paper-and-phone musters and unreliable alternatives (T‑cards, biometric readers) that could delay or misidentify personnel in an emergency—risks highlighted by the Deepwater Horizon tragedy. To address this, Transocean engaged Savance to provide a custom electronic Emergency Mustering solution (E‑Muster / EIOBoard) to improve muster speed, accuracy and situational awareness.

Savance deployed a rugged, PoE‑powered e‑muster system with RFID wristbands or proximity cards, portable tablet endpoints in Pelican cases, wireless redundancy, and integration with the rig’s Global Management System plus a real‑time master display on the bridge. The Savance solution eliminated phone call headcounts, gave instant visibility of who has mustered (and where), and produced measurable gains—muster times improved about 20–25% on average, with full emergency musters completed in under 10 minutes (as fast as ~8 minutes)—significantly improving crew safety and command decision‑making.
