Turning the promise of a smarter health a reality

University Hospital Río Hortega, a 600-bed public hospital serving 215,000 citizens in Castilla y León, wanted to improve data use across management, research, and clinical practice. Working with Savana and its Savana Manager® / Savana Médica platform, the hospital sought better visibility into free-text clinical records to reduce variability in care, support clinical pathways, and generate real-world evidence from routine practice.

Savana implemented an NLP-based solution that structured electronic clinical record data and made it easy for clinicians to analyze the full patient population. The hospital used it to identify overuse of proton-pump inhibitors in more than 30% of admitted patients, detect that around 20% of hepatitis C patients were missing specialist follow-up, and launch targeted improvement programs. The solution also accelerated research output, helping Dr. Gloria Sánchez Antolín produce two oral communications in three months and access data from the previous 48 hours, while giving leadership a clearer, real-time view of hospital indicators.
