Walmart Embraces Test Automation and Open Source to Increase Coverage and Deploy More Often

Walmart Labs faced slow, manual testing and fragmented tooling as it scaled its e‑commerce platform, which limited release velocity to twice per month and left teams unable to ensure coverage across the many browsers, OSes and devices customers use. Misaligned goals and legacy practices made it difficult to improve quality and developer productivity at the pace the business required.

Walmart built Test Armada (open source) and formed the DXT Center of Excellence, standardized on Selenium/Appium/Espresso/XCUITest, and adopted the Sauce Labs Continuous Testing Cloud to scale browser and device coverage. The result: over 40 projects using Test Armada, about 50,000 automated tests per day (14M+ tests in 7 years), coverage across 700+ browser/OS combos and 300+ real devices, daily deployments instead of twice monthly, and an estimated 750,000+ man‑hours saved in a year.
