Verizon Media Accelerates Millions of Tests Every Month Using Open Source Technology and Sauce Labs

Verizon Media, the digital-content parent of brands like AOL, HuffPost, TechCrunch and Yahoo, manages thousands of web, mobile and server apps across tens of thousands of projects. Faced with heavy reliance on manual testing and a need to scale quality assurance, the company centralized its CI/CD efforts around its internally built platform, Screwdriver, but still needed an automated testing solution that could handle massive volume and multiple browsers, OSes and devices.

Verizon Media integrated Screwdriver with the Sauce Labs cloud testing platform to run parallel, automated UI tests on up-to-date browsers and devices without maintaining infrastructure. The combination enabled teams to deploy tests at scale, speed troubleshooting with video capture and debugging, and automate across projects — resulting in 2.7 million tests in one month, a reduction in a common cross‑browser test from 45 minutes to 5 minutes, and roughly 4,500 staff-hours saved per year; Screwdriver was also open sourced to extend these gains.
