Cognos TM1 POC at a Utilities & Generation Firm to Improve What If Budget Analysis

Largest State Public Power, one of the largest state public power corporations operating multiple generating facilities and over 1,000 circuit miles of transmission lines, needed a better way to manage annual budgeting and what-if analysis. Its SAP Business Planning and Simulations (BPS) process was slowed by data integration delays of more than 24 hours per batch cycle, and its aging interface and limited allocation capabilities made budgeting error-prone and decision-making difficult. Saturn Business Systems addressed these challenges with IBM Cognos TM1 and the Saturn IGNITE Framework.

Saturn Business Systems ran a proof of concept that improved integration with SAP by redesigning ETL jobs and enabling parallel processing, cutting integration time from hours to just a couple of minutes. The new IBM Cognos TM1 environment also gave users web and Excel-based interfaces plus advanced modeling and allocation tools. As a result, Largest State Public Power could perform many-to-many allocations more easily, and Saturn Business Systems completed the full budget cycle POC in a record 55 days.
