Nationwide, the world’s largest building society, faced significant and escalating fraud losses and created a strategic fraud analytics programme and team to tackle the problem. The organisation selected SAS to provide the analytical platform and tools needed to detect, investigate and report on multiple types of fraud and to meet anti‑money‑laundering requirements.

Using SAS rule‑based detection, Enterprise Guide for ad hoc queries, Enterprise Miner for predictive modelling and SAS reporting tools, Nationwide built ten fraud rule sets that run data from multiple sources, flag suspicious activity, and automate reporting for investigators and management. The solution improved AML compliance, enabled faster, self‑service reporting and investigations (preventing losses such as a £5,000 scam), and helped drive a 75% reduction in fraud losses from their peak.
