A SAS Case Study
The Florida Department of Corrections, which operates more than 50 facilities housing over 100,000 inmates and supervises another 145,000 individuals in the community, faced the challenge of managing vast, disparate data from dozens of sources while answering hundreds of ad hoc queries and improving public safety. The agency needed to identify likely reoffenders, prioritize scarce program resources, and predict or prevent disruptions in facilities—all quickly and accurately for stakeholders from lawmakers to the Governor’s Office.
Using SAS Foundation Tools the DOC consolidated scheduled data extracts into a data warehouse and developed predictive models (survival analysis, logistic regression) and applications like the Corrections Integrated Needs Assessment System (CINAS) and a facility risk dashboard. The result: faster, more accurate responses to requests, prioritized enrollment of high‑risk inmates in interventions, early warning of trouble spots in prisons, better resource allocation and strengthened citizen safety.
