A SAS Case Study
DSW Inc., a leading branded footwear and accessories retailer operating 377 stores (plus e‑commerce and leased departments), faced a merchandising challenge: shoes come in many sizes, store backrooms are small, and standard 12‑packs often sent wrong size mixes. The company needed an automated, supply‑chain‑integrated way to send the right styles and sizes to each store to avoid stock‑outs, excess floor inventory, and markdowns.
DSW implemented SAS Size Profiling and Pack Optimization integrated with its buying and allocation systems to build store‑specific size curves and recommend customized pack mixes and unit replenishment. The automated recommendations validated store managers’ insights, improved seasonal planning by building forward sales into inventory plans, reduced markdowns and stock‑outs, enabled buyers to purchase less inventory with confidence, and secured vendor cooperation on alternate pack configurations.
