Case Study: IAG New Zealand achieves 90% address geocoding for more accurate risk-based pricing with SAS

A SAS Case Study

Preview of the IAG New Zealand Case Study

Better data quality equals more accurate view of insurance risk, pricing

IAG New Zealand, the country’s largest general insurer, needed more accurate location data to assess property risk and price premiums equitably. The company found many customer address fields unvalidated, which limited its ability to geocode properties precisely for GIS-based risk ratings—only about 70% of addresses were suitable for geocoding before remediation.

IAG implemented SAS Data Management (SAS Data Quality Desktop) to standardize and validate address data, delivering fast results—return on investment within about 1.5 weeks and meaningful outcomes within a month. Geocoding match rates rose to nearly 90% (exceeding 85% shortly after deployment), enabling finer-risk profiling, improved pricing accuracy and underwriting decisions, and the launch of broader data quality and governance programs.
