American Honda Motor Co., Inc. uses SAS® to improve warranty claims and forecast usage for parts and services

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. collects detailed repair and warranty data from technicians at more than 1,200 U.S. Acura and Honda dealerships, creating a large and complex dataset. The company needed to turn that data into actionable insights to reduce inappropriate warranty costs, ensure parts availability, and improve customer satisfaction.

Using SAS Analytics, SAS Enterprise BI Server and SAS Forecast Server, Honda automated reporting, surfaced suspicious claims for daily review and built forecast models from repair and sales histories. The results: claims analysis is three times faster (from over 3 minutes to under 1), true detection of noncompliant claims rose from 35% to 76%, a week of staff time was recovered, labor costs fell across 52% of labor codes, and forecasts have been within 1% year‑over‑year.
