A SAS Case Study
Ag Energy Co-operative is a Canadian natural gas and electricity co-op that buys wholesale energy and supplies 375 agribusiness members across Ontario. Faced with extreme price volatility in the natural gas market (notably in 2008) and the need for accurate position control and clearer risk insight across multiple divisions, the co-op required a solution that could reliably reflect its portfolio and surface the right questions for risk and trading decisions.
By implementing SAS BookRunner, Ag Energy centralized transaction data, enabled drill-down analytics and blended divisional positions to reveal imbalances and drivers of mark-to-market changes. The platform improved reporting and risk modeling, helped the co-op balance its portfolio to the gigajoule, and supported returning profits to members as patronage shares and dividends—positioning the organization to manage future market changes and expand into new areas like carbon credits and FX.
