UCSF speeds cancer gene profiling with Sapio Sciences and 6+ messages per second

UCSF's Clinical Cancer Genomics Laboratory (CCGL) faced significant challenges in managing its high-throughput UC500 cancer gene profiling assay. The lab struggled with disparate data systems, relying on manual data entry and generating unstructured PDF reports, which created inefficiencies and the potential for errors. To address these issues, UCSF partnered with vendor Sapio Sciences to implement a solution using the Sapio LIMS platform.

Sapio Sciences implemented a solution that involved creating a bi-directional connection between Sapio LIMS and UCSF's APeX EHR system using a RESTful API and a custom HL7 engine. This allowed for the automatic synchronization of data and the transformation of unstructured PDF results into searchable, structured formats. The results included significantly improved speed and efficiency for the UC500 panel, with automated data transfer mitigating errors and enabling providers to search and view reports directly within their clinical system.
