UCSF Improves Speed and Efficiency of its Cancer Gene Profiling Assay Using Sapio LIMS Platform

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) faced significant inefficiencies in its Clinical Cancer Genomics Laboratory. The lab managed its cancer gene profiling assay using disparate digital platforms, which required staff to manually enter data from Epic's EHR/EMR system into the Sapio LIMS. This manual process was error-prone and struggled to handle increasing order volumes. Furthermore, test results were stored as unsearchable PDF documents, making it difficult for providers to find and report critical information.

Sapio Sciences implemented a solution using its LIMS platform and RESTful API to create a bi-directional connection with the EHR system. They developed a Python script to convert results into a searchable format and used an HL7 engine to automatically synchronize patient, order, and provider data. This automation eliminated manual entry, enabled error-free data transfer at high throughput, and made results immediately searchable for providers within their existing system, allowing UCSF to run its UC500 panel quickly and efficiently.
