A SAP Case Study
National Grid, a major UK-based energy utility, faced the strategic challenge of logically separating its UK gas distribution business, comprising 130 plants and 21% of its global operations, to prepare it for a potential sale. The company needed to move these assets to a new company code within its existing SAP ERP, BW, and SRM systems with minimal disruption and a strict eight-month timeline. To achieve this, they engaged the Data Management & Landscape Transformation (DM<) team from SAP to utilize its plant reallocation service.
The SAP team implemented its solution, which included plant reallocation, BW split, and asset accounting split services. This allowed for the successful transfer of 1.8 billion data items and 5,500 employees to the new entity. The project was completed on time and within budget, resulting in a seamless cutover with no business disruption. The success of this SAP-led initiative enabled National Grid to continue its sale process and prepared the separated business for its subsequent physical systems migration.
