Case Study: World Sailing achieves real-time race insights and lower costs with SAP Sailing Analytics

A SAP Case Study

Preview of the World Sailing Case Study

How World Sailing uses leading-edge analytics and the power of AI to take its global racing series to new heights

World Sailing, the governing body for sailing, needed a better way to uncover and visualize complex race data for teams, coaches, sailors, and fans. Its existing regatta analysis depended on costly wind sensors on each vessel, creating operational challenges and limiting fast access to live data. World Sailing worked with SAP, using SAP Sailing Analytics along with SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP HANA Cloud, to explore a more efficient, AI-driven approach.

SAP implemented virtual wind sensors and real-time analytics to process GPS and wind data, giving World Sailing live rankings, race visualizations, and granular performance insights without the need for expensive hardware. The results included around 160,000 wind directions generated per year and insights consumed by 1.9 million sailing enthusiasts since 2021, improving race analysis, reducing costs, and enhancing the fan experience.
