Case Study: SBB CFF FFS achieves reduced energy consumption with SAP

How SBB collects locomotive driver feedback to help reduce energy use by exploring energy-controlling traction and optimizing driving styles accordingly

SBB CFF FFS, Swiss Federal Railways, wanted to reduce rail energy consumption and support its 2030 carbon-neutrality goals by better understanding how train driving styles affect energy use. To do this, the company needed a way to collect, process, and compare large volumes of journey and infrastructure data in real time for its train drivers.

Using SAP Business Technology Platform, including SAP Extension Suite and SAP HANA, SAP helped SBB CFF FFS build an application with dashboards that show drivers their energy use after each journey and compare it with others. The solution improved transparency and awareness, and SBB expects annual energy savings of 11 GWh; it also processes more than 30 million data records per day and transmits energy data by the second.
