Case Study: Trenitalia reduces maintenance costs and improves train reliability with SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service

A SAP Case Study

Preview of the Trenitalia Case Study

How Does Italy's Major Rail Operator Keep Two Million Passengers Running on Time

Trenitalia, Italy's major rail operator, needed to shift from reactive to predictive maintenance for its fleet of 7,000 trains to improve efficiency and avoid costly downtime. Their challenge was to manage the vast amount of data from onboard sensors to prevent breakdowns and systematically plan maintenance interventions. To address this, they turned to vendor SAP and implemented the SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service solution.

The SAP solution, running on the SAP HANA platform and using SAP IQ, analyzed real-time data from thousands of sensors on each train. This allowed Trenitalia to perform dynamic, predictive maintenance based on the actual condition of components. The results included an 8-10% reduction in maintenance costs, improved asset reliability, and the ability to manage 700 terabytes of data annually, ensuring trains run smoothly for millions of passengers.
