Ensuring Mine Worker Safety with a Mobile Risk Assessment App

Vale S.A., a global mining company, faced inconsistent, paper-based Safe Work Permit risk assessments across its worldwide operations that reduced visibility, standardization, and sustainability. Vale needed a mobile, offline-capable solution that could enforce corporate safety standards and integrate with its SAP landscape — including SAP SuccessFactors to manage user access based on completed trainings.

Vale and partner B2RISE developed a Safe Work Permit mobile app on the SAP Business Technology Platform with integrations to SAP ECC and SAP SuccessFactors, enabling on-site digital risk assessments, offline data capture, digital signatures, and centralized analytics. The solution now supports about 24,000 users and 5 million permits per year, saves an estimated 170 tons of paper annually, increases safety visibility and enforcement across locations, and uses SAP SuccessFactors to ensure only trained users can execute permits.
