A SAP HANA Case Study

Preview of the Mercy Case Study

Standardizing Clinical Processes to Improve Patient Care and Organizational Efficiency

Mercy, a 40,000‑employee health system with 43 acute and specialty hospitals and 700 physician practices across four states, sought to reduce variation in clinical care, give clinicians more accurate and timely information at the point of care, and improve capture of clinical diagnoses in the patient record. The challenge was to standardize best practices across many sites to improve patient outcomes and organizational efficiency.

By integrating SAP HANA, SAP BusinessObjects analytics, Epic’s EHR and third‑party technologies, Mercy enabled real‑time queries and on‑demand analytics at the point of care. The initiative cut heart‑failure and pneumonia mortality to less than half the national average, reduced time to administer critical medications by three hours, and delivered nearly $75 million in benefits (including $65M from improved documentation and $9.42M in surgical supply savings), earning the HIMSS Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence.
