A SAP HANA Case Study
Surgutneftegas, a major vertically integrated Russian oil and gas producer, needed to modernize its IT landscape to support growth and real-time decision making by migrating to the SAP HANA platform. The company’s challenge was to upgrade SAP R/3 to the latest SAP ERP release, perform a Unicode conversion, consolidate 28 systems into three HANA instances, and meet strict 24x7 availability requirements while keeping business downtime to a minimum.
Working with SAP’s System Landscape Optimization group and using SAP Landscape Transformation, Surgutneftegas executed a one-step approach for upgrade, Unicode conversion, and customization adoption with an incremental, near-zero-downtime client transfer. The nine-month project included three test cycles and a dress rehearsal, delivered on time and within budget, cut productive-system downtime to one weekend (two days), and reduced operating and maintenance costs while transferring knowledge to enable future transformations.
