Managing data volumes for an efficient and sustainable migration to RISE with SAP with expertise from SAP MaxAttention

BMW Group, a global automotive manufacturer headquartered in Munich with about 154,950 employees and €155.5 billion in revenue, needed better transparency and control over enterprise data volumes to smooth its migration to RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. The primary challenge was to “right-size” and “tight-size” the new cloud-based IT landscape to avoid excessive in-memory computing requirements and reduce infrastructure footprint.

Working with SAP MaxAttention, BMW implemented a custom data volume management strategy using RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, SAP HANA native storage extension, and inverted individual indexes for archiving. The standardized, centralized approach minimized in-memory requirements, accelerated migration runtimes, and is expected to cut IT infrastructure costs by about 25% and in-memory database needs by roughly 50%, while enabling rollout across 64 system landscapes and supporting BMW’s sustainability goals.
