Case Study: Jumbo Supermarkten reduces food waste and improves freshness with SAP HANA

A SAP HANA Case Study

Preview of the Jumbo Supermarkten Case Study

How a supermarket is using scientific predictions to increase sustainability

Jumbo Supermarkten, the Dutch supermarket chain with 700+ stores and over 100,000 employees, serves around 10 million customers annually. Facing inaccurate, Excel-based forecasts for freshly made baked goods, convenience items and prepared meals, stores frequently under- or over-produced—leading to empty shelves, frustrated customers and staff, inefficient work and increased food waste.

Jumbo replaced the legacy PAL with PAL 2.0: a SAP Fiori iPad app on SAP BTP using SAP HANA Cloud and SAP’s Unified Demand Forecast (ML-driven) to generate store-tailored forecasts from two years of data plus weather, holidays and time-of-day. The rollout (piloted in Belgium) balanced availability and waste, improved employee efficiency and satisfaction, and delivered measurable gains—about 1% expected turnover improvement, ~10% waste reduction and 73% of employees reporting the tool made their job easier.
