Ensuring Mine Worker Safety with a Mobile Risk Assessment App

Vale S.A., a global mining company headquartered in Brazil, faced a safety and operational challenge: its Safe Work Permit risk assessments were largely paper‑based, inconsistent across locations, hard to share or analyze, and environmentally costly. Standardizing and digitizing this process was critical to ensure consistent hazard evaluation for high‑risk maintenance work across Vale’s global operations.

In partnership with B2RISE, Vale built a mobile Safe Work Permit app on the SAP Business Technology Platform with offline capability, digital signatures, photo/document capture and integrations to SAP ECC and SuccessFactors. The app—now used by about 24,000 users—supports roughly 5 million permits per year, saves an estimated 170 tons of paper annually, and delivers better visibility, analytics and enforcement of safety procedures across Vale’s operations.
