Case Study: State of Indiana gains predictive insight to combat drug abuse with SAP HANA

Combating Drug Abuse Using SAP Predictive Analytics with the SAP HANA Platform

The State of Indiana faced a severe drug abuse crisis that had strained medical, social and criminal-justice systems—overdose deaths rose dramatically in the 2000s—prompting the Management and Performance Hub (MPH) to seek data-driven insight into trends and root causes across the state. The challenge was to combine large, disparate crime-lab and agency data sets to visualize changing drug-use patterns and predict emerging hot spots so resources and policy responses could be targeted more effectively.

Using SAP Predictive Analytics on the SAP HANA platform, Indiana’s MPH normalized and aggregated statewide crime-lab data (aligned to DEA classifications), enabling rapid analysis, visualization, and predictive modeling. The effort uncovered rising drug types and related crime trends (including pharmacy robberies), improved officials’ ability to spot and predict hot spots, and informed targeted interventions — with plans to extend the approach to other areas like fraud, recidivism, and child protection.
