Becoming a Private Cloud Provider with SAP Landscape Virtualization Management 2.1

Munich Re, a global reinsurance and insurance group based in Munich with more than 43,000 employees, faced a major IT challenge: transform its SAP landscape into a private‑cloud model while migrating roughly 80 SAP systems from Oracle to SAP HANA within a five‑year window. The IT team needed to standardize and automate operations, ensure high availability and application‑layer disaster recovery, and dramatically speed up error‑prone system refreshes to meet agile business demands.

By implementing SAP Landscape Virtualization Management and concurrently migrating to SAP HANA, Munich Re automated routine tasks (start/stop, copy, refresh), centralized dependency management and scripts, and virtualized most systems. The outcome: refresh times fell from about five days to 1.5 days (>3x faster), roughly 600 workdays saved (≈20% reduction in admin effort), improved reliability and traceability, and a clear path toward self‑service IaaS and cloud readiness.
