AstraZeneca Brasil, the Brazilian arm of the global biopharmaceutical company, faced a challenge to modernize and unify its procurement operations so Procurement could be strategic rather than operational. The local team needed a technology-led, minimally customized solution that aligned with AstraZeneca’s global practices while meeting Brazil’s legal and tax requirements, and to drive change management and greater autonomy for business units.

AstraZeneca deployed SAP Ariba Procurement with Deloitte support, standardizing and automating processes and limiting local customizations. As a result, 93% of purchase orders are now completed in Ariba, approval steps fell by 55%, users can self-approve purchases up to US$10,000, over 6,400 items are bought through the system across 350+ suppliers, and purchase cycle times dropped from up to ten days to about two—delivering greater transparency, compliance and a more strategic Procurement function.
