O2 UK, a Telefónica subsidiary serving millions across the United Kingdom, wanted to offer an attractive “unlimited” music streaming bolt-on on select plans without causing bill shock or complicating data management. The challenge was accurately identifying and measuring streaming music traffic in real time and ensuring those streams didn’t count against customers’ normal data allowances.

O2 deployed Sandvine’s real-time traffic classification and Quota Manager to detect streams from providers like Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer and exempt that traffic from customers’ standard data quotas on eligible 30GB/50GB plans. The result: a differentiated unlimited streaming product that delights subscribers, drives revenue opportunities and improves network cost-effectiveness.
