Suny College At Old Westbury Delivers High-Performance Scalable Vdi With Fusion Iomemory Solutions

SUNY College at Old Westbury, a selective public liberal arts college with over 4,400 students, needed a virtual desktop infrastructure that could match physical-desktop performance and scale cost‑effectively to support 650 concurrent users. Previous VDI attempts were limited by spinning-disk I/O bottlenecks, preventing reliable boot and login performance during lab peaks.

The college added SanDisk (Fusion ioMemory ioDrive2) flash to VMware ESXi servers and deployed VMware Horizon View, producing a linearly scalable, easy-to-deploy VDI. Results included up to 150 desktops per server, over 1.5x faster boot times and nearly 2x faster desktop startups, faster remote IT response, and improved security.
