Sanford Health Easily Scales Citrix Xenapp With Fusion Iomemory Solutions

Sanford Health, a large healthcare provider running Epic Hyperspace EMR on Citrix XenApp, faced performance and scalability problems when Citrix vDisk images were served from its SAN. Slow boot times, hour-long ERP reports and time-consuming maintenance limited the environment’s ability to grow from 40 to more than 135 Citrix receivers supporting ~1,300 physicians and 26,000 employees.

Sanford moved the XenApp vDisk images off the SAN onto Fusion ioMemory ioDrive 640GB cards in eight Citrix provisioning servers, accelerating the virtualized EMR stack. The change delivered about 6x faster ERP reporting (reports cut from ~60 to ~10 minutes), at least 3x faster boot times, consistent performance at scale, elimination of restart work after patches, roughly 20 IT hours saved per week, and tripled capacity on the same hardware.
