Host Europe Gmbh Eliminates Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming Database Bottleneck

Host Europe GmbH, a leading European managed hosting provider, was supporting a customer running a browser-based MMOG with multiple virtualized MySQL databases that had highly variable I/O profiles. Scaling was being handled by continually adding servers, which drove up costs and management complexity and still couldn’t guarantee consistent performance under unpredictable load spikes.

Host Europe deployed SanDisk’s Fusion ioMemory (ioDrive) cards to consolidate databases and run I/O‑intensive and non‑I/O VMs on the same KVM hosts. The solution delivered consistently high performance, eliminated service‑interrupt concerns, and reduced infrastructure by roughly 50% fewer servers and disks, 2–5× more workload per server (5.25× performance density), and over 30% less hardware overall — enabling lower costs, simpler operations, and better pricing for customers.
