Clydebank College Makes It For Further Education Smarter

Clydebank College, a modern further-education campus serving over 11,000 learners, faced rising IT costs and management overhead keeping roughly 600 PCs current for more than 1,000 simultaneous users. Head of ICT David Black wanted virtual desktops to extend PC life and cut costs, but traditional SAN-backed VDI struggled with performance during boot storms and would require expensive additional storage to meet QoS requirements.

Working with Taupo Consulting, the college deployed SanDisk Fusion ioMemory (ioDrive Duo) with VMware View in a proof-of-concept that delivered physical-like performance, reduced image-deployment times from days to minutes, and cut SAN load. The solution eliminated boot storms, increased concurrent-user capacity from about 80 to 320 per server (supporting roughly 100 desktops per server with a GB640 Duo), reduced storage and infrastructure costs, and improved IT productivity.
