A Samsung Case Study
The University of Portland, a private higher‑education institution of about 4,000 students, needed an always‑on computing infrastructure to support team‑based, anytime/anywhere learning while reducing high maintenance, support and electricity costs associated with traditional desktop PCs. To modernize its environment, the university chose Samsung SyncMaster Cloud displays (NC240) together with VMware View, Microsoft App‑V virtualization and Cisco UCS servers to build a private VDI cloud.
Samsung’s Cloud displays were deployed as the virtual end‑client, connecting directly to the network so students and faculty can access courseware campus‑wide from slim, energy‑efficient monitors. The Samsung solution cut hardware costs by roughly 50%, reduced electricity use by 60–80%, improved response times, extended expected device life to 8–10 years, and dramatically lowered support overhead (over 90% of user issues solved by simple session restart), while enabling broader access to applications and reducing network and maintenance expenses.
