Samsung Wearables, SmartThings and Reemo Help Older Adults Live Independently and Safely

Ohio Masonic Home, which provides assisted and independent living to more than 1,500 residents, needed a non‑stigmatizing way to monitor health and preserve independence for older adults. Previous pendant- and camera-based solutions had low adoption, so the organization sought technology that residents would actually use. Samsung’s wearable and smart‑home stack — notably the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch and Samsung SmartThings platform — was chosen (in partnership with Reemo) for a five‑month pilot to address these needs.

Samsung’s solution paired the Gear S2 and SmartThings with Reemo software for simple wrist gestures, remote biometric and behavioral monitoring, and an online dashboard. In a 60‑resident pilot Ohio Masonic tracked frequency of use, health outcomes and resident satisfaction and saw measurable benefits: reduced falls (for example, residents can turn on lights from bed), proactive interventions based on changing patterns, high adoptability and strong satisfaction; staff training took about 30 minutes. Ohio Masonic is already layering the Samsung-based solution into two new developments.
