Samsung Solid State Drives Amp Up Music Player Performance

Muse Research, a San Jose company that builds the Receptor hardware for running large virtual-instrument libraries on stage and in the studio, needed a storage solution that could deliver much higher data throughput while surviving the heat, cold, vibration and rough handling of touring. To meet those requirements they evaluated and selected Samsung 840 Pro solid state drives (SSDs) to replace traditional hard disk drives.

Samsung implemented 840 Pro SSDs in the Receptor, cutting large-instrument load times from about 15.05 seconds to 7.58 seconds (roughly halving load time) — a savings of about 175 seconds over a 25‑song set — and boosting polyphony beyond the 900‑voice limit reached with HDDs. Samsung SSDs also reduced heat, power draw and acoustic noise and proved far more rugged in extreme temperatures, giving Muse Research customers faster performance and greater touring reliability (with plans to adopt higher‑capacity Samsung 850 Pro drives).
